I received this award during my participation in the 20th MESA Robotics Competition.
Every year, the San Diego MESA Alliance holds a robotics competition where groups of four MESA students from different colleges compete in maneuvering challenges utilizing Lego Mindstorms kits. Each group is given a kit to assemble a robot of their own design and must complete two challenges. The first challenge involves getting the robot to travel a specified path with the goal of doing it faster than the other teams. The second challenge involves delivering one Lego piece to four squares while the other three robots are doing the same thing.
My team and I were able to beat the record for the fastest time a robot can finish the second challenge. Sadly, our robot failed to follow the path all the way due to having tested our robot on a different floor surface than the one that was at the competition, which threw off the calibrations set for moving around the path. The first part was the most crucial part of the competition and so it cost us from attaining first place.
